Method and Control of Adjusting Radial Clearance of Angular Contact Ball Bearings

Apr 08, 2023

After installation, single row angular contact ball bearings need to adjust the axial and radial clearance. The axial clearance needs to be adjusted according to the installation structure, load, working temperature, and bearing performance. How should the radial clearance be adjusted? Below, the editor will introduce the method and control of adjusting the radial clearance of angular contact ball bearings.

Method for Adjusting Radial Clearance of Angular Contact Ball Bearings

1. Closing and erecting bearings

The inner ring of the bearing is parallel to the end face of the outer ring and cannot be tilted. Press and hold the inner ring with your thumb and swing it 2-3 times, then press down tightly to position the inner ring and rolling element in place. Position each roller so that there is one roller on each side of the top of the inner race raceway. Push the top two rollers inward to ensure proper contact with the inner race raceway.

2. Optional feeler gauge

Refer to the corresponding clearance values in the clearance standard based on the inner hole size of the bearing, and determine the corresponding larger and smaller feeler gauges in the feeler gauge based on their larger and smaller values.

3. Measure the clearance measurement value

After the bearing is erected, the gap between the outer ring raceway and the roller on the upper part of the machine is where the radial clearance is relatively large. The thickness of the feeler gauge plate is measured as a larger radial clearance when three consecutive rollers can pass through and the remaining rollers cannot pass through by rotating the ring and roller cage assembly for one cycle. The thickness of the feeler gauge when it cannot pass through three consecutive rollers and can pass through all other rollers is the smaller radial clearance measurement value.

4. Radial clearance calculation

Take the arithmetic mean value of the larger and smaller radial clearance measurements as the radial clearance value of the bearing. After the radial clearance of each row is qualified, take the arithmetic mean value of the clearance as the radial clearance of the bearing.

How to Control the Radial Clearance of Angular Contact Ball Bearings

The internal clearance of angular contact ball bearings refers to the total distance that one bearing ring can move radially or axially relative to the other bearing ring. For the clearance of bearings, it is necessary to distinguish between the initial clearance before installation and the working clearance after installation and reaching its operating temperature. The initial clearance of bearings is generally larger than the working clearance, which is due to the tolerance fit of different interference amounts, as well as the varying degrees of thermal expansion of the bearing ring and its adjacent components, resulting in the expansion or compression of the ring.

In order to ensure the good operation of motor bearings, radial clearance is very important, which requires selecting suitable bearings to match according to the actual characteristics and operating conditions of the motor. The general principle for bearing operation is that the working clearance of angular contact ball bearings should be zero or slightly preloaded; But for cylindrical roller bearings, there must be a certain amount of remaining clearance during operation.

Under normal working conditions, selecting a regular set of clearance bearings can obtain a suitable working clearance. However, when the working and installation conditions are different from the general situation, such as the inner ring and outer ring of the bearing are interference fit, or the temperature difference between the inner ring and outer ring has a great impact, the bearing with a larger or smaller clearance than the ordinary group should be selected.
