Toothed belts were invented in the early 1940s, for use in textile mills. The first known automobile engine to use a timing belt was the American 1954 Devin-Panhard racing car, which used an engine converted from pushrods to overhead camshafts through the use of a toothed belt made by the Gilmer Company. This car won the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National Championship in 1956.

The 1962 Glas 1004 was the first mass-produced vehicle to use a timing belt. The 1966 Pontiac OHC Six engine was the first US mass-produced vehicle to use a timing belt, while the 1966 Fiat Twin Cam engine was the first mass-produced engine to use a timing belt with twin camshafts.

Your Leading Timing Belt Supplier

SUN AUTOMATION GROUP LIMITED was founded in 1986 and had been focusing on exporting high bearing ever since. The timing belt is an integral part of your vehicle's engine, keeping many of the moving parts operating together with precise timing, to produce optimum efficiency and power. A bad timing belt can cause catastrophic engine failure, so it's important to stay on top of any required maintenance in that area and have the belt replaced according to the service interval set out in your vehicle's owner's manual. We work with professional bearing manufacturers and have invested over 300 million in upgrading product formulas.

Classified according to tooth shape, synchronous belts are mainly divided into two categories: trapezoidal teeth and arc teeth. Corresponding to the gear transmission, the former's pulley tooth shape is involute (a simple trapezoidal tooth shape can also be used), while the latter corresponds to an arc tooth shape.
At present, the development of trapezoidal tooth synchronous belts is relatively mature, and standards such as ISO 5296:1982 and GB/T 11616-1989 have stipulated their standard dimensions. Arc teeth have better performance and can transmit greater torque.
According to the direction of the teeth, they can be divided into single-sided teeth and double-sided teeth. Double-sided teeth are divided into two types: A and B. The teeth on both sides of the former are symmetrically arranged, while the teeth on both sides of the latter are staggered.

Functions of Timing Belt

•Precision registration and timing with no loss of high torque carrying capability.
•Minimal vibration and chordal effect
•Positive slip proof engagement
•Wide speed range, especially important when the entire speed range is developed from a single source
•Virtually no elongation (stretching) due to wear
•High mechanical efficiency, as much as 98% when properly maintained. By contrast, chain drives are in the 91-98% efficiency range, while V-Belts average in the 93-98% range.
•Power transmission efficiency is not lost with use
•Clean operation, no need for lubrication
•Reduced noise
•Long, dependable trouble-free service
•Excellent abrasion resistance
•Rust resistant
•Resists chemicals and contaminants
•Increased drive design options
•Weight savings
•Safety issues

Common Materials of Timing Belt

Rubber for Timing Belts

Rubber is the most common material for timing belts in numerous industries and vehicle engines. Despite its popularity, rubber experiences longevity issues under high temperatures and exposure to motor oil.

Polyurethane for Belts

Polyurethane is renowned for its high temperature resilience, superior elasticity, and oil resistance, making durable timing belts for diverse applications.

Fabric-Based Timing Belts

Fabric timing belts suit high-performance or rapidly accelerating applications, offering varied materials, excellent tensile strength, low friction, and resistance to extreme temperatures.

Usage Requirements of Timing Belt

In general, most timing belts are housed behind protective covers and engine parts, because of this, perform a visual inspection of the belt is not an easy task.

During the visual inspection, first of all, examine the outside of the belt. If you detect that it is frayed, visibly worn or cracked on either side of the belt, it is time to replace it.

Another key point is found in the tension of the belt. If the tensioner fails, certain problems will arise whether the timing belt is too tight or loose, directly affecting the timing service of the crankshaft and camshaft and prematurely wearing the timing belt.

FAQ

Q: What do numbers on a timing belt mean?

A: The number you see is the number of millimeters of the pitch's length. In our example, the length of the pitch of the timing belt would be 640 millimeters, for instance. In standard sizing, the length will be in inches. For example, 168XL050, the 168 would mean 16.8" long.

Q: What is the maximum speed for a timing belt?

A: Belt surface speed should not exceed 5500 feet per minute (28 m/s) for larger pitch belts and 10000 feet per minute (50 m/s) for minipitch belts. For the HTD belts, a speed of 6500 feet per minute (33 m/s) is permitted, whereas for GT2 belts, the maximum permitted speed is 7500 feet per minute (38 m/s).

Q: What is the lifespan of a timing belt?

A: A timing belt's lifespan is determined by both mileage and age, typically lasting between 60,000 to 100,000 miles or about seven years, though this varies by manufacturer and is influenced by driving conditions like extreme temperatures and oil leaks.

Q: Are there warning signs before a timing belt breaks?

A: While there isn't always a distinct warning, you might notice symptoms like a ticking noise from the engine, engine misfiring or rough idling, a check engine light, or an engine that won't start. However, many timing belts fail suddenly and without any prior signs, which is why it's crucial to follow the recommended replacement schedule in your car's owner's manual to prevent severe engine damage.

Q: How are timing belts specified?

A: In an ideal situation, you can identify the belt you have by its markings alone. Typically, those are alphanumeric labels that identify the belt's specifications, often describing the most important dimensions critical to properly identify them.

Q: How to choose a timing belt?

A: Step 1: Determine Peak Torque.
Step 2: Decide on Diameters.
Step 3: Choose Tooth Profile.
Step 4: Calculate Teeth in Mesh (T.I.M.)
Step 5: Compute Belt Pitch Length.
Step 6: Divide Length and Determine Pitch.
Step 7: Determine Effective Tension.
Step 8: Select Strength Factor.
